Overall Design

The cottage design features a large interior, screened porch. No matter the weather (or the hatch) the wilderness experience dominates the cottages' interior and its social spaces, year round.

Foundations & Walls

The main structure from the footings to the roof is Integraspec ICF. This is eco-friendly, insulated concrete construction is verified as the most energy efficient construction system available in Canada. Conventional concrete foundation construction requires the use of toxic materials which release oils and waterproofing tars that contaminate the ground around the building and ultimately seep into the river. ICF construction completely eliminates this problem.

Heating System

The heating system is designed for year round or seasonal occupancy with A Selkirk "Bordeaux Fireplace". This high efficiency unit delivers both 3 zone heating and the essential cottage ambiance only a real, wood burning fireplace can provide.

Septic

The septic system is a Bio-filter. This is a compact, highly efficient, self-contained treatment plant which acts as a septic tank but does't require a leaching bed. Its discharge has a BOD rating equivalent to rainwater. Many lakes and rivers in Nova Scotia are threatened by aging septic systems along their shores. Eliminating the leaching bed saves many mature trees reducing the clear cut area surrounding the cottage preserving the natural habitat.
